6 Summer Hydration Tips: Feeling Your Best in the Heat

Summertime signals many of us to head on outside for runs, bike rides, walks, and even to just sit and enjoy the sunshine. But with the additional heat can come headaches, fatigue and that parched feeling, all symptoms of... dreaded dehydration.

Dehydration happens when the body does not have enough fluids to function properly which is why it’s important to have a healthy intake of liquids each day. While the recommended daily intake varies, women are encouraged to drink around 2.7 litres of fluid equivalent to 11.5 cups and the amount for men is about 3.7 litres or 15.5 cups. This fluid can come from water, various beverages, and food. However, the specific amount of required liquid is dependent on age, health conditions, climate, and lifestyle.

Drinking water

Water is a natural liquid that does wonders for the body, one being keeping our skin moisturized, which in turn reduces a dry, flaky appearance. Without proper hydration, you risk your skin looking older and more wrinkled than it really is, as dehydration causes the skin to lose its elasticity. Therefore hydrating regularly increases the suppleness of the skin, making it look younger and more radiant. But the benefits of water doesn’t stop there. Water also helps with regulating body temperature, aiding with nutrient delivery to cells, and keeping joints and tissues moving fluidly.

Many of us are guilty of trying to measure how much water we drink a day and coming up with a grand total of shall we say… less than the recommended. That’s why we compiled some helpful tips for beating the heat and keeping your body feeling hydrated and at it’s best.

6 Tips for Better Hydration:

1. Hydrate as part of your daily routine.

If it’s hard to remember to drink water, try and schedule it at regular times: a glass when you wake up, one after breakfast, one after lunch, one before/ after your workout and so on. Making hydration a part of your routine will make it habitual and less of a worry.

2. Jazz up your water!

Jazz up your water

Making your water look a little more summery with a slice of lemon or fruit, may motivate you to drink water more often. We recommend everything from mint leaves to lemon slices to berries! This also adds a fruity flavour to the drink, for those who may dislike the taste of plain water.

3. Rather drink something else other than water?

Water is the recommended liquid for hydration. However, if water is an absolute no for you, other natural drinks can be incorporated in moderation. Herbal teas and naturally blended fruit juices are liquids that can be consumed to get the needed water intake out of the way.

A few popular choices when it comes to herbal tea include chamomile and green tea. Chamomile is packed with flavonoids that help counteract the negative effects of free radicals, which are harmful particles in our bodies. Green tea is well known for being antioxidant and catechin-rich, which may help protect the skin from damaging sun exposure.

Plain coconut water is also great for hydrating; keeping it natural without added sugar is best. In general, water is the best option as it is calorie-free, sugarless, and easily accessible.

4. Finding your water in food!

Nature’s own bounty of fruits and vegetables has got you covered! To make sure you are keeping hydrated, enjoy servings of fruits such as watermelon, blueberries, apples, and oranges. Vegetables such as cucumbers, tomatoes, and lettuce can be made into delicious garden salads too. Many of these fruits and vegetables are composed of over 90% water. Not only will you gain your water intake through these healthy snacks and meals, but your body will also thank you for the added nutrients and vitamins.

5. Have some reminders to assist you.

A sticky note in your workplace or home is the perfect way to nudge you to drink some water. Additionally, our smart devices can be great assistants when it comes to reminding us to hydrate. Try keeping a reminder on your phone to drink a glass of water every hour or so.

6. Keep Your Skin Looking Beautiful and Hydrated:

In addition to hydrating regularly to keep your skin moisturized, hydration can also be added externally to the skin. We recommend Bloomiss’s Balance Mist, which combines Aloe Vera Gel Juice, Rose Floral Water, Geranium Floral Water, Watermelon Extract, and other natural ingredients to give your skin a soothing, rejuvenating experience.

We hope these tips and recommendations were helpful- stay hydrated this summer!

With a Smile,

Crystal
